Education

Education is a high priority in Newfoundland and Labrador. Government has made extensive investments to create and maintain a world-class system of public education and post-secondary institutions. There has been a tuition freeze for Memorial University since 1999. Also, in 2009, the provincial government has eliminated their interest requirement of all provincial government issued student loans. This has further demonstrated the province’s commitment to investing in the education and future of youth.

Memorial University of Newfoundland, the largest university in Atlantic Canada, offers comprehensive course offerings in a large array of subjects on four campuses, including one in Harlow, England.

Newfoundland and Labrador's public college, College of the North Atlantic (CNA), is one of the largest post-secondary educational and skills training centres in Atlantic Canada, with 17 campus locations throughout the province. CNA was also selected from a number of other colleges to set up campus in the State of Qatar, an emirate in the Middle East.

In addition to the public post-secondary system, the province is home to 24, highly-regulated private career colleges. Comprehensive offerings and tuition rates which are among the lowest in the country, contribute to a high rate of participation in post-secondary education, and a large, skilled labour pool of home-grown talent.

World Class Research and Development

Newfoundland and Labrador’s education institutions have also contributed to establishing world-class research and development facilities. Memorial University was named number one in the country for research income growth on Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities list for 2008 in the universities with Medical/Doctoral Programs.

The province’s research and development facilities employ internationally recognized professionals and have the most advanced technology available. They offer excellence in teaching, research and scholarships for both local and prospective international students, in a warm atmosphere where affordable housing and rich educational experiences await.

Highly Responsive to Industry Needs

In partnership with government and industry, these institutions are leaders in innovative technologies and commercial applications in many sectors. Oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, environmental, biotechnology, communication, and ocean technologies are among the areas where cooperative research and development projects have led to new business opportunities. To keep up with the evolving demands of industry, Newfoundland and Labrador’s education system is highly responsive to educational and training requirements.

When oil was first discovered off our shores, there was little infrastructure and expertise in place to harness the resource. One billion barrels of oil later, and less than 20 years after construction began on the province’s first oil project, Newfoundland and Labrador’s educational programs and facilities have grown to meet the industry’s needs, while talented graduates and world-class research and development capabilities in all facets of the petroleum industry, are now sought world-wide.
