Newfoundland and Labrador is strategically positioned on international shipping lanes, with deep water, ice-free ports, giving exceptional access to global markets. As the first point of entry from Europe to North America, the province is ideally located as an arctic gateway for northern exploration and development.
Our industrial park infrastructure offers quality space at a reasonable cost and quick access to supplies and services, communications infrastructure and established transportation networks. The development of our industrial parks is part of an established plan. Each park takes advantage of the strengths of the area and is within easy access to essential infrastructure. Newfoundland and Labrador is also served by international airports and first-rate road infrastructure which includes the Trans Canada Highway.
The province has a number of industrial and manufacturing facilities and sites which are ready to provide businesses with a wide range of services.
- Whiffen Head Transshipment Terminal is a three million barrel storage and transshipment terminal that services the offshore petroleum industry. The facility is located in Placentia Bay, one of the world's largest and deepest navigable bays and one of Canada's largest ports based on tonnage, largely crude oil and petroleum products.
- North Atlantic oil refinery is a 115,000 barrel of oil per day crude oil processing facility. With upwards of $850 million in upgrades and new equipment in recent years, the refinery uses clean fuel technology to produce low-sulphur, clean fuels from sour crude. The refinery's location in the North Atlantic and year-round ice-free port, provides access to petroleum markets in Europe and the U.S. eastern seaboard, and puts it in close proximity to sour crude supplies in Russia, Venezuela and the Middle East.
- Bay Bulls Marine Terminal (BBMT) manages and operates an ISPS-Certified Marine Terminal facility in the Port of Bay Bulls. It is the closest ice-free, deepwater port to the Grand Banks oil fields, servicing offshore projects such as Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose. The facility consists of 14 acres of waterfront property and is an ideal location for all types of light and heavy marine industrial activity from loading and discharging vessels, to drill rig repairs and upgrades.
- Four world class industrial marine and fabrication facilities support industry:
- Bull Arm Fabrication Site: The site is located in Trinity Bay, 130 km (80 mi) by road from St. John's. It is a world-class fabrication facility with capabilities for steel fabrication and concrete construction, outfitting installation, at-shore hook-up and commissioning. Its ice-free port, marine facilities and adjacent deep water allow for near-shore mating and hook-up. Major fabrication, industrial or manufacturing projects can be performed from start to finish at this one location with access to the worldwide marine transportation network.
Purpose-built for construction of Hibernia's 1.2 million tonne drilling and production platform, Bull Arm was also the site of the delicate mating of the GBS with the topsides, and was the launch point for the platform's tow-out to its permanent location on the Grand Banks. It was also used for fabrication work related to the Terra Nova, White Rose and the Voisey's Bay nickel projects and the sheltered water survey and refit of the drill rig Henry Goodrich. More recently, a portion of the site was used to fabricate, assemble and test subsea components for the Husky Energy North Amethyst Project. - Cow Head Fabrication Facility: The Cow Head Fabrication Facility has a land area of 265,750 m2 (871,884 ft2), with a 45,932 m2 (150,696 ft2) in-house fabrication facility. The load-out quay can accommodate very large structures, making it a strategic service centre for offshore vessels and semi-submersible rigs that can be floated to dockside. Site upgrades completed in 2003 have increased the capacity of the facilities to fabricate large modules and dock large vessels up to 350 m (1148 ft) in length.
Cow Head was the designated facility for the fabrication of modules and the full topside integration for the SeaRose FPSO. The site has the facilities and skilled workforce to undertake rig upgrades and servicing, onshore and offshore industrial fabrication and overall marine shipbuilding and repair. - Marystown Shipyard: The shipyard facility has 330 m (1082 ft) of water frontage with a 30,702 m² (100,729 ft²) in-house fabrication area. The combination of a syncrolift and side transfer system provides access to the sea with sufficient water depths and channel widths to accommodate vessel sizes up to 19.5 m (64 ft) beam and 80 m (262.5 ft) in length.
- St. John's Dockyard Ltd. (NEWDOCK): St. John's Dockyard Ltd. (NEWDOCK) is an ISO 9001:2000 certified facility, located on 18 acres of prime and readily accessible waterfront property in St. John's. Strategically positioned on all major North Atlantic shipping routes, NEWDOCK's facilities are well-sheltered within the ice-free port of St. John's Harbour. Equipped for heavy industrial and mechanical activities, NEWDOCK is Newfoundland's largest machine repair facility offering a full range of support activities to all fabrication, maintenance and service demands required within the offshore and ship repair industries.
Through assistance programs aimed at offsetting capital costs associated with start-up and expansion, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada will ensure capital outlays are not a deterrent to your firm's ability to move to a strategic location.
