Newfoundland and Labrador is home to more than 50 knowledge-intensive enterprises that develop innovative ocean technology products and services for niche markets in Canada, the United States, Central and South America, Europe and Asia. 

 

Industry

  • Ocean Technology companies employ more than 1,400 professionals and generate total estimated revenues of approximately C$230 million.
  • A key component of the industry's success is a unique partnership of companies, institutions and government agencies known as OceansAdvance. This multi-stakeholder ocean technology cluster initiative ( www.oceansadvance.net ) facilitates world-class capability and aims to make the St. John's region an international location of choice for ocean technology.
  • Many of the province's R&D facilities are one of a kind and cater to an international clientele including port authorities, fisheries departments, coast guards and academic institutions.

 

Infrastructure, Research and Development

  • Newfoundland Memorial University, the largest university in Atlantic Canada, has more than 17,000 students. It grants undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of engineering and science disciplines.
  • Marine Institute, a division of Memorial University, is recognized as one of the most respected centres for marine learning and applied research in the world. It offers diploma and degree programs in a wide variety of marine disciplines.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador's key ocean technology research and development facilities serve as the backbone of the ocean technology community. These facilities, all located near or within Memorial University of Newfoundland, provide fundamental research, technology development expertise, industry incubation, testing, training and scientific validation services.
  • Facilities such as the National Research Council-Institute for Ocean Technology, located in St. John's, evaluate the design of vessels and offshore structures in its ice tank, towing tank and offshore engineering basin.
  • Memorial University's Ocean Sciences Centre is a leading Canadian cold oceans research facility.
  • AquaNet, located at the Ocean Sciences Centre of Memorial University, is one of 21 national Networks of Centres of Excellence. It is dedicated to fostering a sustainable Aquaculture industry in Canada.
